Our 17-year-old client was working as a corn detasseler earning minimum wage in a temporary position while on summer break from school. He was discovered collapsed in a field. No one had witnessed what happened. EMS responded to the scene and were able to resuscitate him en route to the emergency room. When he was stripped from the rubber waders he was wearing as a result of his employment, it was found that he had suffered substantial burns over multiple parts of his body, mainly focused on his legs and pelvic area. Our client underwent a number of procedures including a complicated split-thickness skin grafting to his legs. Interestingly, doctors were never able to determine the cause of the burn injury.
Our client’s temporary employer, while sympathetic, offered no financial assistance. Fortunately, our client was given a full duty release at the end of his treatment, meaning he could return to work without physical limitations. Despite the unknown cause of the injury, and despite the fact that our client was working a temporary, low-wage position, we were able to negotiate a $58,000 settlement based on the injuries suffered and need for future treatment. Thus our client was in a position to return to work with a settlement to help him.
We also were able to procure multiple loans for our client to allow him to meet his financial obligations while the case was pending.
